BATMAN
Batman
Intake Date: November 2023
Batman was found as a stray after he escaped his hutch and his previous owners no longer wanted him. He lived in a wood hutch in their backyard, on dirt and gravel. He had no hay or stray or anything for insulation, no enrichment and when volunteers were shown the hutch there was no food or water. Batman had lived there with another rabbit for 1.5 years, but unfortunately the other rabbit escaped as well and was not found.
Batman was brought to the local shelter and examined by a rabbit savvy vet who discovered he had very, very diseased teeth. Unfortunately his condition was so severe that he could not be adopted out, and he was facing euthanasia unless transferred to a rescue. We took him in knowing he'd likely remain in our care as a permanent resident, but we wanted to give him a chance at living a comfortable life where he could be happy and loved.
When we did xrays on Batman, they showed showed that his left lower jaw had two loose teeth and two others that were abscessed. The left upper cheek teeth were wildly sloped in the wrong direction, there was a large ulcer on his cheek from a crazy long upper first premolar, pus and ulcer in the back left side of mouth from where his last upper molar was stabbing. There were some points and abnormally shaped teeth on the right side but nothing that was hurting him. Then his incisors were wildly abnormal - there was infection around the lower incisors and the upper incisor roots had grown backwards through the palate bone. His leaky eyes are due to squishing of the nasolacrimal ducts by crazy tooth roots (shown in the one X-ray photo) and will likely be a long term issue. The other X-ray photo points to the two worst teeth on his lower jaw.
When asked what we can do for him, our vet said “antibiotics, pain relief, and love” - until his pain can’t be managed anymore and we have to help him cross the rainbow bridge.
